    MULLAITTIVU: TROOPS of Task Force (VIII) engaged in search and clear operations in the general area PUTHUKUDDIYIRUPPU east recovered five anti air craft missiles including one training missile and four used missiles, three 3M11M type used missiles, one T-56 weapon, twelve T-56 magazines, one thousands and five hundred rounds of T-56 ammunition, one Browning pistol, two boxes containing explosives, eighty 82 mm HE mortar bombs, four 82 mm illumination mortar bombs,  seven hundred rounds of Multi Purpose Machine Gun (MPMG) ammunition, one hundred and two MPMG links, one T-81 weapon, thirteen M-75 hand grenades, nine Rocket Propelled Grenades(RPG),

  • General Sarath Fonseka Appointed New Chief of Defence Staff

    GENERAL Sarath Fonseka RWP, RSP, VSV, USP, rcds, psc, the incumbent Commander of the Army has been appointed as Chief of Defence Staff by His Excellency the President Mahinda Rajapaksa in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. He is to take over his duties shortly.

  • 19th Army Commander Appointed

    MAJOR GENERAL Jagath Jayasuriya USP, ndu, psc, the present Commander Security Forces Headquarters (Wanni) has been appointed as New Commander of the Army. He is the 19th Commander in the Sri Lanka Army. He is to resume office on Wednesday (15).

  • Troops Recover LTTE T-56 Weapons, Pistols & an Army Seniority Book

    WANNI: TROOPS in PUTHUKUDIYIRUPPU conducted search and clear operations throughout Sunday (12) and recovered one browning pistol, six T-56 weapons, one 60mm mortar launcher, thirty-nine Rocket Propelled Grenades(RPG), eight RPG charges, one disposable RPG launcher, eighty-eight hand grenades, ninety-five Arul bombs, one pouch, two Multi Purpose Machine Gun (MPMG) tripods, two 60 mm mortar bombs, three 40 mm cartridges, one box of 12.7 mm ammunition.....

  • Presidential Probe into Massacre of aid workers; Army and Navy exonerated

    THERE is strong evidence of LTTE presence in the city centre on the morning of the 4th August. A Rev. Father and a Divisional Secretary have also testified to the presence of the LTTE in the Mutur town on 4th August. Army and the Navy have been totally exonerated by the Report of the Presidential Commission Inquiry into the Killing of the 17 aid workers of the INGO, Action Contre La Faim (ACF). The Commission led by Nissanka Udalagama, former Supreme Court Judge, has concluded that the death occurred on the morning of the 4th of August 2006.

  • Elephant Pass Salterns Production to Resume

    THE PRODUCTION activities of the Elephant Pass Salterns would be started quickly as an accelerated program has been made under the “Uthuru Vasanthaya” to accelerate production of all factories as the terrorism in North has now wiped out, said Industrial Development Minister Kumara Welgama. Industrial Development Minister Kumara Welgama discussing with a group of old employees regarding the immediate starting of the production activities of the Elephant Pass saltern under the “Uthuru Vasanthaya”. Ministry Secretary R.V.D. Piyathilake also participated.

  • Mahanayake Visits North, Plans to Renovate Temples

    BUDDHIST religious sites destroyed or damaged by the LTTE during the war in the North and East are to be renovated and a programme for such renovation will be launched soon, Malwatte Chapter Mahanayake the Most Ven. Thibbotuwawe Siddhartha Sri Sumangalabhidana Thera said yesterday. He had visited the Buddhist religious sites in the North to assess the condition of these sites and later chaired a meeting at the historic Madukanda Viharaya in Vavuniya.

  • LTTE Combatants to Sit A/L Examination

    THE DEPARTMENT OF EXAMINATIONS will issue special Identity Cards for over 1,000 candidates including 42 ex-LTTE combatants at the Vavuniya and Chettikulam IDP centres to enable them to sit for the G.C.E (AL) examination this August, the Defence Ministry said. The Identity Cards will be issued as a special arrangement considering the unusual circumstances under which the candidates are sitting the examination, said Anura Edirisinghe Commissioner General of Examinations.

  • Northern Road Development in Full Swing

    ECONOMIC activities and people to people contact between the North and the South will propel with the development of the road network in the Northern Province after 30 years. The Road Development Authority (RDA) has used its fullest potential to achieve road development targets in the province soon. According to RDA General Manager R.W. Ramjet Prefacer, the reconstruction of Mannar - Pooneryn road is in progress with the participation of 17 contractors and each contractor should complete a stretch of kilometer within three months.

  • Special Credit Scheme to Develop North

    PRESIDENT Mahinda Rajapaksa officially launched a Special Development Credit Scheme titled ‘Awakening North’ which is exclusively designed for the development of the Northern Province by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) at a meeting at Temple Trees yesterday with CEOs of Banking Institutions to discuss the contribution of the banking sector in the Northern Province development.
