  • President Opens National Vesak Zone in Colombo

    BUDDHARASHMI National Vesak Zone-2010, organized by the Presidential Secretariat and Gangaramaya together was declared open by HE the President Mahinda Rajapaksha lighting a traditional oil lamp in Gangaramaya premises on the invitation of Ven. Galaboda Gnanissara Thero the Chief Incumbent of Gangaramaya after religious observances. peaking on the occasion the President said that this Vesak zone inaugurated during the period of terror in the country but it is happy to celebrate Vesak this time in a liberated country free from terrorism after 30 years.......

  • Jaffna School Students Sing Vesak Devotional Songs after 30 Years of Absence

    A MASSIVE crowd of tens and thousands flocked to witness the Jaffna Vesak Zone on its first day, 27th May to experience the sanctity of Vesak spirit.People in Jaffna (Yalpanam) as well as visitors from various parts of the country to the peninsula irrespective of their ethnicity and religion walked along the illuminated roads in the Vesak Zone admiring hundreds of Vesak lanterns and other decorations came of after and absence of nearly 30 years.

  • Eastern Towns Celebrate Vesak

    THE COASTAL areas of the Ampara District celebrated Vesak on a grand scale after a lapse of three decades in a free and fair manner with the participation of Muslims, Tamils and Christians in the area. There was a hive of activity with a series of events in Akkaraipattu Army Camp which drew a large gathering of Tamils, Muslims and Christians. They helped the Army Personnel in organising the events.

  • Sri Lankan UN Peace Keepers Honoured in Haiti

    THE recent UN Medal Parade ceremony of Haiti-based Sri Lankan Peace-Keeping contingent drew overwhelming admiration of the attendees, present on the occasion, as it turned out to be a blend of both military and culture. The customary UN medal parade, the prestigious military ceremony that recognizes the exemplary contribution, made by any specific contingent to maintain law and order in Haiti, saw its Sri Lankan contingent accord a salute to visiting Chief Guests, Mr Luc Duchesne, Chief of Staff to the Special Representative to Secretary General (SRSG) and Major General Luiz Guilherme, Force Commander on the eve of their completion of service and departure from Haiti.

  • Mannar Water Scheme Opened

    THE Drinking Water Scheme at Pallemunai, Mannar, a project that provides pure drinking water to over 63,600 people was inaugurated last Thursday (27) during a ceremony, headed by Mr. Hiruhiko Karoda, Chairman, Asian Development Bank and Mr. Basil Rajapaksa (MP), Minister of Economic Development. The project funded jointly by the Asian Development Bank, Netherlands Trust Fund and the Government of Sri Lanka is to build 330 houses in the area.

  • Court Martial to Resume Sittings on 21st June 2010

    The first Court Martial hearing charges against General Sarath Fonseka resumed its sittings at Navy Headquarters Tuesday (01) afternoon. Both prosecution and defence counsel continued their submissions for about three and a half hours. The case was postponed to 21st June 2010.

  • Ex -“ Combatants Get Employment Opportunities

    EX-FEMALE cadres currently undergoing rehabilitation are to undergo garment industry related “On the Job” training and are to join the Garment sector work force at Tri-Star Apparels chain of garment factories on succesful completion. As the first step, Tri-Star apparel whilst giving training opportunities for 150 ex-female combatants at the Ratmalana garment factory will absorb them as permanent employees on completion of the training.

  • Army Women Compete in Wrestling

    THE hotly-contested Inter-Regimental wrestling championship of Sri Lanka Army for the year 2010 was held at the Army Physical Training Centre, Panagoda on 31st May. Women soldiers created history at this meet by presenting the first women's wrestling competition in the Army. Men's competition had two sets for veterans and amateurs. In the veterans' competition, 80 competitors from eight regiments competed for the championship in eleven weight categories.
