Army Women Compete in Wrestling

THE hotly-contested Inter-Regimental wrestling championship of Sri Lanka Army for the year 2010 was held at the Army Physical Training Centre, Panagoda on 31st May. Women soldiers created history at this meet by presenting the first women's wrestling competition in the Army.

Men's competition had two sets for veterans and amateurs. In the veterans' competition, 80 competitors from eight regiments competed for the championship in eleven weight categories. Sinha Regiment competitors became champions by scoring 52 points while the Artillery Regiment became the runner-up scoring 28 points.

In the amateurs' competition where 84 competitors from eight regiments competed in eleven weight categories, the Electrical and Mechanical  Engineering Regiment emerged champions in it by scoring 25 points while the Sinha Regiment was choser runner-up by scoring 15.5 points.

The Women's competition presented for the first time in the history, was won by the competitors from 2nd Women's Corps while the 6th Women's Corps became the runner-up.

The Chief Guest for the occasion was Major General D.R.A.B Jayathilaka Commandant of the Army Volunteer Force. Major General S.W.L Daulagala, Commander Security Forces Headquarters (South), Brigadier N.A.P.C Napagoda, President of Army Wrestling Association, Senior Officers, sportsmen and women and a large number of soldiers were present on the occasion.
