COMMANDER of the Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya extending his New Year greetings to troops based in the North and East inducted a programme to dispatch stocks of New Year sweetmeats during a symbolic gesture held at Army Headquarters premises this morning (10). Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, pioneer of the project, the first in Army history handed over parcels containing those sweetmeats to representatives of island-wide Security Forces Headquarters in Jaffna, East, Kilinochchi, Mullaittivu and various other remote installations in the Army, as a part of the symbolic inauguration.
THERE were no Avurudu holidays for the soldiers all these years. Instead of the sound of fire crackers that herald the auspicious times of the New Year, what they heard were the sounds of guns and artillery fire. While the rest of the country looked forward to a new beginning with fresh hope, our war heroes were away from their families and friends fighting a bitter battle to save the country from the clutches of terrorism.
MAJOR GENERAL S.A.P.P. Samarasinghe, Commandant, Sri Lanka Medical Corps (SLMC) during a simple military ceremony on April 7, raised the 5 Sri Lanka Medical Corps at Panagoda. Major K.K.M. Kannangara, Commanding officer in the newly raised 5 SLMC flew the Corps Flag and attended to the religious ceremonies. The new office complex of the 5 SLMC was declared open later on after lightning the traditional oil lamp.
