  • The Oxford Union: Freedom of Expression in Universities

    I trust that all right thinking people will condemn the security threats that led to the cancellation of President Mahnda Rajapaksa’s invited speech at the Oxford Union. Universities are sacred precincts where all sorts of ideas are discussed and dissected to permit the expansion of knowledge. As such censorship, especially under threat, is anathema and counterproductive to ideals of free thought.

    A seminar on English Language and Literature was organized by the soldiers of 523 Brigade in Nunavil Jaffna for the students who sit for the G.C.E.(Ordinary Level) examination this month.   • BCGR Rehabilitated Ex-LTTE Combatant Qualifies for University Entrance

    “I never thought I would receive this opportunity to get through the G.C.E. (A/L) exam and qualify to enter the university. The special school runs by the Bureau of the Commissioner General of Rehabilitation (BCGR) under the Catch-Up Education Scheme, enabled me to achieve these results. I am thankful to the BCGR for all what they provided to me for my studies. They provided us everything. We only had to study in the rehabilitation centre.’’
