Special Forces Training School (SFTS) at Maduruoya adorned ceremonial garbs on Saturday (11) to bid goodbye and offer its greetings to eleven officers and four hundred and forty-three of the Special Forces during a passing out parade (PoP), dignified by the presence of Secretary Defence Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army.
A special Guard of Honour saluted the visiting Secretary Defence Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa who later on inspected it in the company of Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya. Minutes after that a special helicopter, adding a new dimension to the proceedings brought the colours to the venue, expected to be pinned on graduands who were passing out on the same occasion. Mr Rajapaksa afterwards, awarded Special Forces badges and the Colours to the soldiers. Both Commander of the Army and Commander Security Forces, Wanni followed suit.
A special display of skills by parachutists, taekwondo men and fighter crafts took the centre stage as the day’s proceedings came to an end. Mr Rajapaksa made a brief address on the occasion and reminded those graduands the importance of maintaining discipline at all times despite constraints.
Mr Rajapaksa in his address told the gathering that the Tri-service personnel have been always kept alert to counter any threats to the territorial integrity of the country. In the future, all such threats could therefore be challenged, he said.
On the same occasion, Mrs Chithrani Gunaratne, President, Special Forces, Seva Vanitha Unit made a donation of Rs 3 million towards the ongoing 'Brave Hearts' project at Anuradhapura. Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya, President, Seva Vanitha Army Branch accepted the donation.
Two souvenirs were presented to Secretary Defence and Commander of the Army by Major General Kamal Gunaratne as tokens of memory.
