  • Woman's Suicide Bid Foiled by Police and Army Officers

    A SOLDIER and a policeman rescued a 28 year old woman who attempted to commit suicide by jumping into the sea at Bambalapitiya yesterday afternoon. The soldier and the policeman were on duty at a check point on the marine drive, when they saw the woman jumping into the sea, police media spokesman Prishantha Jayakody said. The police constable who was on duty at a check post near the sea at Bambalapitiya had seen the woman jumping into the sea.

    THE proposed Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB) ‘Wellness Resort’, designed for life-time disable War Heroes who suffered injuries in terrorist attacks during humanitarian operations continues to receive patronage from Sri Lankans abroad. Mr. Malin Abeythunga, Public Relations Officer in Australia based SPUR organization, on behalf of his daughter Ms. Sonali Abeythunga resident in Australia was among the firsts to donate a sum of Australian dollars (AUD) 150/= towards the SVAB construction fund. Mrs. Manjulika Jayasuriya, President SVAB on Wednesday (7) accepted the cheque to that value from the Australian anthropologist at the SVAB office, Army Headquarters.

  • Tri-Service Trainee Officers at DSCSC Visits India on Study Tour

    A military delegation of trainee officers at Sapugaskanda Defence Services Command and Staff College (DSCSC) are currently visiting India on a 10-day long study tour as an integral part of their training curriculum. The delegation to India for training is comprised of two foreign trainees. Presently four such DSCSC trainee officer military delegations, representing tri-services of Sri Lanka are on study tours to Pakistan....

  • Maiden 'Gympo - 2011' Rocks New Track at Thunkama

    Racing enthusiasts, Indika Sanjaya and Navin Marapana, the 4x4 pair in their modified Land Rover recently became the cynosure at the maiden Sappers 4x4 Challenge Racing event, ‘Gympo - 2011’ at Thunkama, Embilipititya. The duo sending rays of surprise along the new road track won the overall Championship in the inaugural ‘Gympo - 2011’ at Sri Lanka Military Corps of Engineering Training School.
  • More Families Given Land After Demining

    Troops in the East handed over more land to its original owners in a ceremony, held at Koonathive East, Sampoor recently. There areas before handing over to the owners were cleared of landmines by troops. A total of 56 families from Koonathive east Sampoor were resettled with necessary assistance provided to them by the troops. Several Senior officers, civil invitees attended the occasion.
