  • UN, European Nations Angry With LANKA for Defeating Tigers

    THE UN, and many European nations, are very angry at Sri Lanka for defeating the separatist Tamil rebels, after nearly 30 years of fighting. The UN, and particularly Norway, were trying hard to work out a peace deal. The Tamils, represented by the LTTE (an organization eventually recognized as an international terrorist group) refused to budge on their demand for partition of the island. A decade ago, the LTTE controlled a third of the island, although Tamils are only 13 percent of the population. It used to be 18 percent, but many have fled because of the LTTE violence, and government attempts to cope. Three years ago, fed up with over a decade of failed peace efforts, the government was determined to crush the LTTE and regain control of the entire island.

  • Delegation for 'SL - Pakistan Defence Talks' Speaks to Commander

     
     
    A delegation from Pakistan Defence Forces and her Ministry of Defence, now in Sri Lanka for the annual ‘Sri Lanka - Pakistan Army to Army Defence Talks’ Round 3 of the Office of the Chief of Defence Staff (OCDS) called at the Army Headquarters Monday (14) afternoon and met the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva.
     
  • More Families Given Land After Demining

    Troops in the East handed over more land to its original owners in a ceremony, held at Koonathive East, Sampoor recently. There areas before handing over to the owners were cleared of landmines by troops. A total of 56 families from Koonathive east Sampoor were resettled with necessary assistance provided to them by the troops. Several Senior officers, civil invitees attended the occasion.

    COMMANDER of the Security Forces (Jaffna) Major General Mendaka Samarasinghe bade goodbye to officers and soldiers at Security Forces Headquarters (Jaffna) last morning (23) and left Jaffna to take up duties as the Chief of Staff at Army Headquarters, Colombo.
