  • Zero Casualties in Mine Clearing

    “The Sri Lankan Army is the only army in the world that has cleared 366,870 landmines without causing any damages to any mine-clearer within two years,” said Brigadier Udayantha Wijeratne of the Engineers Squad of the Sri Lanka Army. He made this observation yesterday (02) delivering a speech in the presence of military representatives of 41 countries at the ‘Defeating Terrorism-Sri Lankan Experience’ seminar held at the Galadari Hotel.

  • 'Kokavil Transmission Tower, A Boon to North'

    The Kokavil tower, the tallest multi-purpose transmission tower in South East Asia, will be opened by President Mahinda Rajapaksa on June 6. Addressing the media in Colombo yesterday, Media and Information Ministry Secretary W B Ganegala said that the people living in the North and Vanni will be able to have clear TV and radio reception after 30 years with the setting up of this tower. Around Rs 450 million has been spent for the construction of the 174 metre tower which is situated at Kokavil, the centre point between Jaffna and Vavuniya. The tower is to be utilized for television, radio and telecommunications transmissions as well as military communication operations.

    The military officers who attended the three day international seminar ‘Defeating Terrorism - Sri Lankan Experience’ were unanimous that Sri Lanka’s Security Forces were among the best in the world considering the strategies that were used and their humane aspect during the humanitarian operation. They made these observations during the panel discussion after the seminar organized by the Sri Lanka Army led by Army Commander Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya directed by Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.....

    One hundred (100) more Gemunu Watch (GW) War Heroes whose unrelenting pursuit of humanitarian operations in the North and East against ruthless terrorists saw an end to the long dragged terrorism, were awarded ‘North-East Humanitarian Operation’ Medals during a special ceremony at Kuruwita Gemunu Watch Regimental Centre on Tuesday (31). The day’s ceremony commenced soon after the arrival of the 112 Brigade Commander, Brigadier J.C.P.     Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army Sunday (5) afternoon made a surprise visit to the ‘Abimansala’ (wellness resort for permanently disable War Heroes) site at Anuradhapura, now receiving finishing touches.   • Famous Kokavil Tower Commissioned, Heralding New Era of North-South Dialogue


    The ‘Kokavil Tower,’ South Asia’s tallest transmission tower that signals further promotion of intimate bonds of communication modes between the North and the South was commissioned Monday (6) morning by HE the President Mahinda Rajapaksa during a ceremony. Sri Lankan Engineers and hundreds of Sri Lanka Army troops, led by experts in the Sri Lanka Signal Corps actively assisted the construction of this 174 meter high tower that cost Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (TRC) of Sri Lanka around Rs 350 million.
