  • War Hero Children Receive New Year Gifts from Commander

    A SELECTED group of children of War Heroes who made the supreme sacrifice, became disable and went missing were awarded school stationery, accessories and equipment on Friday (8) as New Year gifts during a special ceremony held at the Army Headquarters. On the invitation of the Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB), Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army gave away those gift parcels to the recipients in the company of Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya, President SVAB.  

  • Commander Takes Stock of Security in Jaffna

    LIEUTENANT GENERAL Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army visited Jaffna this afternoon (09) to assess the security situation, Army assisted development projects and to see for himself the welfare measures of officers and soldiers serving in the peninsula.   • 'They Shun Terrorism & Walk Out Freely'

    SEVEN hundred and twelve former LTTE cadres, rehabilitated under the government’s rehabilitation programme, initiated by Ministry of Justice, were set free on Saturday (9) during a special ceremony that took place at Vavuniya.   • Army Commander Rectifies Anomalies & Provides Relief to Disable War Heroes

    COMMANDER of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya taking immediate steps on behalf of the War Heroes who received injuries and became disable or totally handicapped under different medical categories has adopted unprecedented measures to provide urgent relief to them. Up to most recent times, disabled War Heroes of regular and volunteer force were deployed for some duty arrangements on the recommendations of the Director of Army Medical Services while giving due promotions up to two subsequent ranks to them.

  • President Rajapaksa Speaks to Troops at Palaly

    HIS EXCELLENCY, the President Mahinda Rajapaksa Sunday morning (10) in the company of Tri Service Commanders and the Inspector General of Police visited Jaffna and spoke to a cross-section of the Tri Service and Police personnel at the Palaly Air Base. A Guard of Honour accorded by Gemunu Watch troops greeted the visiting President Mahinda Rajapaksa who is also the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. President Rajapaksa before commencement of the day’s proceedings in Jaffna paid his respects to fallen War Heroes placing a bouquet of flowers at the Palaly War Hero monument.

  • Sri Lanka Light Infantry Seva Vanitha Offers Donations to War Heroes & their Families

    Sri Lanka Light Infantry Regiment Seva Vanitha Unit organized a brief ceremony on Saturday (9) to offer donations to War Heroes and scholarships to their children. This simple ceremony, held at the auditorium of the Sri Lanka Light Infantry Regiment, Army cantonment, Panagoda was headed by Army Seva Vanitha Branch President, Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya as the Chief Guest. A sum of Rs. 1,250,000/= were distributed among a selected lot of disable War Heroes who are in need of capital investment to initiate construction their own houses.

  • Mortar Bombs & Grenades Among Finds

    WANNI: TROOPS conducting their search and clear operations in the general areas of MANIKKAPOLA UTHTHU, MODEIMADU, KOVILKUNCHIKULAM, AKKARAYANKULAM and VELLAMULLIVAIKKAL recovered four anti tank mines, thirty-six anti personnel mines, thirty-two 60mm mortar bombs, four Rocket Propeller Grenades (RPG), three 81mm mortar bombs, eleven hand grenades, four hundred and seventy-two Multi Purpose Machine Gun (MPMG) ammunition, one disposable RPG gun on Monday (11).

    SRI LANKAN families from outstations have been flocking to the Jaffna district via the A9 highway after the government eased restrictions on civlian transport on the main road linking the peninsula to the south. Hotels and restaurants in the Jaffna city are cashing in from the sudden demand as curious visitors from the south make their to Jaffna in private vehicles and public transport.

    THE THREE armed forces together with the Police have been instructed by the relevant authorities to be deployed in vital public places as state intelligence have received information where certain groups attached to various political parties are trying to damage public property, especially the threat is on the ‘fly overs’, military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said.

    MILITARY Spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara denied the rumours that the Security Forces’ and Police personnel’s certain allowances will be deducted from their salary when Rs 2,500 will be added to their salary. Addressing the media yesterday at the MCNS, Brigadier Nanayakkara said President Mahinda Rajapaksa had taken steps grant another Rs. 2,500 allowance to the Security Forces and Police personnel.There was a rumour that the Government will deduct some of their allowances.....
