  • President Opens Air Force Museum

    PRESIDENT Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday opened the Air Force museum depicting the 58 year old history of the Air Force. The President also launched the museum website. Associated with him were Secretary to the President Lalith Weerathunga, Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and Air Chief Marshal Roshan Gunatilleke. Items depicting the evolution of the air industry since the first air plane by the Wright brothers together with the machines by the Air Force during its 58 years, is housed in the museum.

  • Dogs Played Role in Defeat of LTTE -“ Army Vet.

    DOGS were part of the success of the Sri Lanka Army due to the significant role they played in the Eelam War, Captain Dr. Sudeera Talagala said. Speaking at the launch of the new postage stamp to mark the Humane Policy for Rabies Eradication at the BMICH yesterday, he said the 75 dogs in the Army are the best known in the world for their roles in detecting mines, explosives, warning the soldier and carrying out other important activities. Dr. Talagala, who is the only veterinarian in the Army, said that what a dog needs in return is only love and affection.

  • Foreign Delegates Interact with School Children in the East

    A DELEGATION of foreigners representing the US based Senate Foreign Relations Committee (SFRC), to get the first hand experience on resettlement and other development projects in the east, visited Batticaloa and Vakarai areas on Thursday (05) along with the Defence Attaché of the American Embassy. Ms Fatema Sumar and Ms Jacqueline Smith of the SFRC, accompanied by Defence Attaché of the American Embassy Lieutenant Colonel Lawrence A. Smith and Ms Nilmini Gunarathne Rubin first met the Commander Security Forces.....

    “PRESIDENT Mahinda Rajapaksa, as Commander - in -Chief visited areas such as Mulankavil and Thunukkai and his visit served a great boost and strength to the soldiers.  President Rajapaksa has already given the verbal approval for payment of ‘hardlying allowance’ to all soldiers in the Army wherever he works,” so said Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya this morning (06) when he met a cross section of troops in 61 Division Headquarters in Vellankulam, Wanni for the first time after most recent military victories. The Commander’s visit in the company of Wanni Security Forces Commander Major General Kamal Gunarathne, Army Headquarters Director General Operations Major General Shavendra Silva and 61 Division Commander Brigadier Nissanka Ranawana came about just a day after President Mahinda Rajapaksa visited Thunukkai and Mulankavil areas.

  • Commander Appreciates Other Ranks' Role for Army 60th Anniversary Celebrations

    “YOUR efforts to free the motherland from grips of terrorism that affected for thirty years have borne fruits due to all of you who belong to an Army with a proud history of sixty years. In the future, you must fulfill all responsibilities entrusted to you under the country’s Constitution. We have a bigger share of administrative responsibilities to do although the war is over,” so said Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya during a dinner hosted for all ranks in the Army at Anuradhapura Farm Garden Village Hotel late Friday (06). Over 1000 other ranks representing all Regiments of the Army attended the occasion which has been organized in appreciation of the contribution made by the troops for the success of the 60th anniversary celebration.

    WANNI: TROOPS on their search and clear operations in the general areas of ELEPHANT PASS, MULLAITTIVU, PUTHUKKUDIIRUPPU, NADUNKERNI and VELLAIMULLIVAKKAL recovered  two 120 mm mortar bombs, three Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPG), six 60 mm mortar bombs, one Arul bomb, three trip players, four Yesu sets, five I-com radio sets, fourteen I-com hand sets, four wire codes, twenty supper rod antennas, forty-eight Yesu antennas, four battery chargers, thirty-five antenna sockets, one computer hard disk, sixty-eight two-pin connectors,  forty-seven wire socket connectors, fifty-seven VHF sockets, one DVB power supply, eighteen I-com clips,.....

  • Nation Salutes War Heroes on -œRemembrance Day-

    THE “REMEMBRANCE DAY”, the popularly called, 'Poppy Day', annually organized by the Ex-Servicemen's Association in memory of fallen War Heroes was held at Viharamahadevi Park Colombo on Sunday (08) attended by a host of distinguished guests and service personnel. The Chief Guest of the event, Former Army Commander General (Retd) Hamilton Wanasinghe and other invited guests were welcomed at the entrance by the senior office bearers of the Ex-Servicemen's Association pinning a poppy flower on them.

  • 234 Brigade Distributes Fishing Items among Five Resettled Families

    AS A PART of its continuing post-war humanitarian assistance, a stock of items needed for fishing were distributed among five poor families by 18th (Volunteer) Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment [18 (V) SLSR] serving under Batticaloa-based 234 Brigade on Saturday (07) during a simple ceremony  function held at 18 (V) SLSR Headquarters. The donation sponsored by Seva Lanka Foundation included five push-bicycles, five fishing nets, each weighing about 3.5 kg and five wooden boxes to be used for selling fish.

  • Religious Ceremony Held at Somawathi Temple Invokes Blessings on War Heroes

    A RELIGIOUS ceremony was organized by the Security Forces Headquarters-East (SFHQ-E) at the historic Somawathi Raja Maha Viharaya in Polonnaruwa transferring merits to War Heroes who sacrificed their lives for the country’s territorial integrity and invoking blessings on those who are still serving, as a follow-up to the main being events held to celebrate Eastern SFHQ’s 6th anniversary that fell on 31st October. The programme got under way at the historic Somawathi temple premises on 4th and 5th November on the instructions of the Commander SFHQ-(E) Major General Srinath Rajapaksa.
