  • Nearly 170 Ex-Tiger Child Soldiers Sit ALs

    NEARLY 170 former LTTE child soldiers sat the GCE Advanced Level in Vavuniya yesterday as a result of the Government’s humanitarian operations to free the North and East people from the clutches of LTTE terrorism, Examinations Department sources said. The Advanced Level Examination 2009 commenced in 1,827 examination centres yesterday (11). The Examinations Department has established 10 special examination centres in Vavuniya for 1,263 displaced candidates who are presently housed in IDP welfare villages in Vavuniya. Sources said 166 ex-child soldiers from displaced camps sat the Advanced Level examination yesterday.

  • Former Commander General Seneviratne Passes Away

    GENERAL G.D.G.N. Seneviratne VSV, former Commander of the Army passed away this morning (12), the Army Headquarters announced. General Seneviratne who commanded Sri Lanka Army from 12th February 1985 to 15th August 1988 was the 10th Commander of the Army. (more details follow)     

  • Seva Vanitha Pre-Schools Conduct their Annual Concerts

    SEVA Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB) conducts seven pre-schools across the island and nearly 600 small children from Army families continue to receive primary education. With a view to promoting their born talents and aesthetic skills, the SVAB annually organizes variety concerts in each pre-school for kids learning there. Concerts for the year 2009 were organized on 7th, 9th and 10th August in Colombo, Kandy and Diyatalawa.

    WANNI: TROOPS on search and clear operations in the general areas of SUGANDHAPURAM, KUPPILANKULAM, PUTHUKUDIYIRUPPU, VISHWAMADU and WERUWILLU on Wednesday (12) recovered one hundred and three 12.7 ammunition, one hundred and seventy hand grenades, nine Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPG), nine hundred and twenty-six rounds of T-56 ammunition, thirty-two 60 mm mortar bombs.....

  • Lt General Jagath Jayasuriya the Pugilist

    ROYAL College has produced a plethora of scientific boxers during the past 95 years. Scientific boxing is synonymous with Royal College due to the foundation laid by the late Donald Obeyesekere (the father of Boxing in Sri Lanka), his son the late Danton Obeyesekere (who coached Royal for 55 years) and Ponnambalam Rajendram who were all Cambridge `Blues’. This Legacy has been carried on by their pupils who have coached their old School teams subsequently. Among this galaxy of scientific boxers, the name of Lt. General Jagath Jayasuriya, the new Army Commander has a very special place by virtue of the fact that he is one of eleven.....

  • Electricity for Madhu Area

    MADHU road from Madhu road junction to the Madhu church premises has been provided with electricity in time for the feast of Our Lady of Madhu. The project had cost the CEB Rs. 6 million said the Power and Energy Ministry in a press release yesterday. The project was undertaken on the direction of Power and Energy Minister W.D.J. Seneviratne as part of the Uthuru Wasanthaya (Northern Spring) program's 180-day development project. Under this program the Ministry has also provided electricity.....

    WANNI: ARMY troops engaged in search and clear operations recovered four T-56 weapons, thirty-nine claymore mines, four suicide jackets, 50 g of TNT explosives, 200 m long detonator code, 50 kg of C-4 explosives, four rounds of Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) ammunition, one RPG charger, three thousand three hundred and three rounds of T-56 ammunition, thirteen Multi Propose Machine Gun (MPMG) links, one hundred and five electric detonators, three hundred pouches, two hundred and forty-five hand grenades, twenty jackets, fifty-five pairs of trousers, fifty-five shirts, twenty-six caps, one shotgun, one RPG launcher, four 120  mm mortar bombs, one anti personnel mine, twenty-six rounds of 12.7 mm ammunition, two 60 mm mortar bombs,.....

  • Local & Foreign Tourists Once Again Enjoy Beauty of Pasikuda in East

    AFTER the Sri Lankan Security Forces cleared the entire island of terrorists, local and foreign nature lovers have once again got the opportunity to visit beautiful beaches in the east. Local and foreign visitors from various corners have now begun to walk along the golden beach of Pasikudah and dip in the eastern blue seas in relaxed mood. The whole area of tourist importance had totally been cut off to tourists for decades due to LTTE activities. However, valiant troops who dared to fight and eliminate LTTE terrorists first liberated the east facilitating free flow of visitors into the area.

    WANNI: TROOPS on search and clear operations in the general areas of VISUAMADU, AMPAKAMAM, PUTHUKUDIYIRUPPU, SUGANDAPURAM and KUPPILANKULAM on Friday (14) recovered three hundred and seventy rounds of unidentified ammunition, forty rounds of Multi Propose Machine Gun (MPMG) ammunition, eight hand grenades, one hundred and thirty-nine anti personnel mines, one 81 mm mortar trap, twenty-five Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPG), one thousand and twenty-one electric detonators, two Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) chargers.....
