  • Sri Lankan in England Offers Sarees to War Heroes' Widows & Mothers

    A Sri Lankan domiciled in England Mr. Thambaiah Vignaraja donated a stock of 100 valuable sarees in memory of his late mother Mrs. Maheshwari Thambaiah to be distributed among spouses of War Heroes and mothers of the War Heroes. The donation was coordinated by Dr. Bernard Zoysa from Kirulapona. He handed over those sarees to a representative of the Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB) at the donor’s residence on 24th June 2009.

  • Army Chief After War Flies to Jaffna

    GENERAL Sarath Fonseka, Commander of the Army made his first visit to the Jaffna Security Forces Headquarters Thursday (2) morning upon successful end of the Eelam War that brought about immense destruction to the country. Major General Mendaka Samarasinghe, Commander Security Forces Headquarters, Jaffna received him on arrival and conducted him to the Headquarters premises where a Guard Turnout plus a Guard of Honour greeted him in accordance with military traditions.

  • Rare Show of Unity

    PRESIDENT Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday urged all political parties to join hands and work as a team shedding differences, in forging national reconciliation and driving the nation towards rapid development. President Rajapaksa made these observations addressing the inaugural session of the Presidential Committee on Development and Reconciliation at the Presidential Secretariat which was represented by 18 major national political parties in the country.

  • Jaffna Onions in Dambulla

    WITH large stocks of Jaffna onions reaching the Dambulla economic centre, prices of onions have come down by half. Accordingly a kilogramme  of onions that was sold at Rs. 100 is now being sold at Rs. 50. Dambulla Economic Centre Manager G. Christy Wijeratne said the centre received about 50,000 kilogrammes of onions daily from Jaffna and the variety was in great demand among traders in other parts of the country. He said the prices of onions would further come down with more onion stocks expected in Dambulla in the coming days.

  • Task Force-8 Troops Uncover One More Stock of Jewellery

    WANNI: TASK FORCE-8 troops, engaged in search operations in the general area East of PUTHUKKUDDIYIRUPPU on Thursday (2) night were excited to come across another large stock of gold jewellery, that had been kept hidden, apparently by Tiger terrorists after they had been either snatched or taken forcibly from civilians to be used afterwards in exchange of money. The findings were made around 8.00 p.m. while troops were still digging the area for LTTE explosives and other paraphernalia.  

  • Army Starts Tracing Owners of Recovered Gold Jewelry

    COLOMBO: SRI LANKA ARMY authorities, conducting analytical investigations into gold jewelry stocks uncovered from      PUTHUKKUDIRUPPU areas have found that all those jewelry pieces had been apparently pawned to the so-called former “LTTE Eelam Bank” in that area. Task Force - VIII troops participating in clearing and mopping up operations in PUTHUKKUDIRUPPU area at present came across 8709 packets that contained a wide assortment of gold jewelry, including necklaces, bangles, ear rings, chains, etc. 

  • Old Anandians in Australia Donate Sleeping Bags to Army

    SRI LANKAN expatriates in Australia organized under Old Anandians' Association in Victoria, Australia donated 1130 sleeping bags/journey mattresses, worth some Rupees 1.3 million for the use of soldiers in the Sri Lanka Army. This donation was made possible due to initiation and coordination by Colonel (Retd)  Kalinga Gunarathne who is now residing in Australia. Having learnt the requirement of the Army, they came forward to donate these sleeping bags.   

  • Former Terrorist Leader in Beach Drama Arrested

     EAST: THE FORMER LTTE leader for BATTICALOA, moving on a boat in KIRANKULAM seas during the wee hours on Saturday (4) staged a terrorist drama when the boat was to be checked by an Army soldier on suspicion. An Army soldier on duty by the side of the beach has spotted this suspicious boat with one man on board and apprehended it and tried to search it after talking to the boatman. But the boatman, now identified as NALLARATHNAM MOHAN, a leading LTTE terrorist for BATTICALOA region suddenly grabbed the soldier is weapon and went on firing at him.

  • Wanni Commander Visits Rehabilitation Centers in Vavuniya

    COMMANDER, Security Forces Headquarters (Wanni) Major General Jagath Jayasuriya visited two rehabilitation centers established by the government to rehabilitate former LTTE cadres surrendered to the Security Forces Saturday (4) morning. He was accompanied by Lieutenant Colonel Jagath Rathnayaka, Brigade Commander 211 Brigade and representatives from Unicef.
