    The year’s most challenging and sensational Rugby encounter between Defence Services (DS) team and Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) President’s team kicked off at Army Headquarters grounds Thursday (5) evening amidst a galaxy of distinguished guests, including His Excellency, the President Mahinda Rajapaksa.   • Maritime & Naval Experts Explore Possibilities for 'Sustainable Maritime Security Cooperation' During Galle Conference

    The ‘Galle Dialogue’, the two-day international maritime conference, themed “Charting the Course for Sustainable Maritime Security Cooperation” with the participation of more than eleven countries was inaugurated Friday (6) morning at Hotel Light House in Galle.Sri Lanka Navy that has acted as a robust force performing an unparalleled role countering all forms of threats at sea in the past 30 years of terrorism, organized the timely powwow on an initiative taken by Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary Defence, Ministry of Defence.

  • Army Built Three More New Houses for Civilians Handed Over

    The Sri Lanka Army working for the defence of the country and welfare of its citizens has taken steps to build three new houses for three IDP families who are  poor. Those three houses built by the 56 Division were handed over to three poor families on 3rd August 2010. The construction of those houses was done by troops in Sinnaparanthan, Mathiyamadu and Kulavisuddan villages under 561 Brigade area.

  • Army Conducts Awareness Workshop on Eye Ailments

    A workshop that helps the public to identify their eye ailment in advance was conducted at Welikanda, Dambulla and Punani areas recently. This was the first of a chain of workshops organized by the 23 Division of the Sri Lanka Army for the benefit of school children and teachers. 41 students and 29 teachers 29 schools, representing all three communities participated in the workshop.

  • Commander En Route Reviews Area Security in Galle

    Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, accompanied by Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya, President, Seva Vanitha Army Branch visited Galle Area Headquarters Friday (6) afternoon to review ongoing security measures in the area and look into matters related to the welfare of the troops serving the area. Commander of the Army on arrival at the Headquarters was received by Major General S.W.L. Daulagala, Commander Security Forces, South and Galle Area Commander, Brigadier P.U.S. Vithanage.

  • 3rd Witness' Evidence And Cross-Examination Ended

    The Second Court Martial probing into charges against General Sarath Fonseka’s alleged violation of military procurement procedures commenced its sittings at 1.00 p.m. on Saturday (August 07) as scheduled. Both prosecution and defence completed lead of evidence and cross-examination on 3rd witness during the sittings. The Court Martial 2 will resume sittings on 16th August 2010 at 1.00 p.m. (Ends)

  • Army Demining Role Recognized; US to Allocate Rs. 56 m to Buy Vehicles for Them

    Sri Lankan Army deminers, pioneers in the field of demining in the north and east are to receive a tremendous boost for their priceless work, following the US announcement that a decision to allocate Rs. 56 million ($ 500,000) for purchase of more heavy vehicles for the Army’s Humanitarian Demining Unit has been made.   Army deminers, making the biggest contribution to the field of demining have by August 5th 2010 cleared a total area of 679 sq km in the north and east provinces.

  • 2nd Witness Expected to be Cross Examined

    The Court Martial 1 probing charges against General Sarath Fonseka’s alleged participation in political work resumed its sittings on 9th August 2010 at 9.30 a.m. Examination in chief on the 2nd witness was concluded by prosecution during this morning (9). When the trial begins at 9.30 a.m. on Tuesday (10) again, the 2nd witness is to be cross-examined by the defence. However, defence counsel was not present at today’s session. (Ends)
