  • Promotion of Religious Harmony in Jaffna

    TAMIL CATHOLIC community in Atchuveli area hereafter will be able to attend the Sunday Mass and other rituals at the Church of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception since it was handed back to Jaffna Catholic Church by the Security Forces Headquarters – Jaffna SFHQ (J) on  31ST May after about twenty years.  

  • Post-LTTE Era: Reasons for a Bigger Navy

    DEFENCE SECRETARY Gotabhaya Rajapaksa says despite annihilation of the LTTE’s conventional military capacity, the Navy will have to be further strengthened to meet any eventuality. The Navy alongside the intelligence services, he says should be the first line of defence to thwart a fresh LTTE threat. In a brief interview with The Island, the war veteran emphasized the pivotal importance of developing a cohesive approach as part of an overall strategy not only to tackle the LTTE, but enhance regional security as well.

  • SECOND COURT MARTIAL LEADS EVIDENCE

    The second Court Martial probing into General Sarath Fonseka’s violation of military procurement procedures resumed its sittings on Thursday (3) at 3.00 p.m. During the sessions, witness evidence was led by the prosecution and was subsequently cross-examined by Defence Counsel. The next hearing is to resume on 21st June 2010 at 4.00. p.m.

  • LTTE Still Active Abroad

    THOUGH the terrorist outfit LTTE was defeated we still face challenges after the war. We still discuss security concerns with Indian officials openly, Mass Media and Communication Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said. Addressing a press conference at the information ministry auditorium, Colombo, he said some diaspora elements and UN human Rights High Commissioner Navaneethan Pillay were supporting the LTTE . Yet he appreciated the Indian government’s stand on the LTTE banning them for another two years which was beneficial for Sri Lanka.

  • Sri Lankan Peace Keepers Mark Traditional New Year

    HAITI-BASED Sri Lankan Peace Keeping contingent took time off to celebrate the traditional Sinhala-Hindu New Year, giving a new experience to the spectators. The venue, 11 Sribat Headquarters in Leogane was packed with spectators as the peace keepers commenced traditional Avurudu Games such as tugs of war, grease pole climbing.....

  • Coordinating Conference on Fund Raising for -œAbhimansala- Held

    A coordinating conference on fund raising for “Abhimansala” Wellness Resort for disabled soldiers was held on 04th June. The discussion was headed by Mrs Manjulika Jayasooriya, President Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB).  During the meeting held at SVAB Auditorium, they discussed possibilities of organizing a project to raise funds for the construction of “Abhimansala” under the “Brave Heart” project launched by the SVAB under the guidance of its president. They also discussed the steps that should be taken in the future.

    THE 17th ‘Jathika Virujana Sammana’ (National Awards for Acts of Heroism) was ceremonially held at BMICH, Colombo on 3rd June 2010. The Chief Guest for the occasion was Malayasian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka Mr Rosaly Ismail.

  • Army Ruggerites Beat Havelocks

    SATURDAY (5) evening's Division 1 Inter-club Rugby match between the Sri Lanka Army and the Havelocks saw Sri Lanka Army beating its rival by points 31-12.  The match graced by Army Chief of Staff Major General Daya Rathnayake took place at Army Grounds, Colombo.

  • 'Abimansala' Construction Work In Progress

    SOLDIERS in the Corps of Engineer Services have undertaken the ground preparation and foundation-laying work at ‘Abimansala’ (Wellness Resort) at Anuradhapura after the foundation-laying stone was laid by the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya as recent as 15th May 2010.
