  • Death of Army Warrant Officer on UN Peace Keeping Mission in Haiti

     
    Warrant Officer II A.P.S Pushpakumara of 11 Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) who had been serving the UN Peace Keeping Mission in Haiti, died suddenly of a cardiac failure on admission to the Level III Hospital in Dominican Republic on Thursday (29). Warrant Officer II Pushpakumara (39), who had actively contributed to the successful completion of the humanitarian operations during 1995-2009 was awarded the Rana Sura Padakkama (RSP), in recognition of his bravery in the operations, in addition to several other medals, such as Uttama Seva Padakkama (USP) for distinguished service, Poorna Bhumi Padakkama, North East Operations Medal, Anniversary Medals, etc.
     
  • Stage Set for Sri Lanka's 67th Independence Day Parade

     
    67th Independence Day parade, Sri Lanka’s colourful moment of pride and dignity, recalling the valiant struggle for freedom from colonizers, takes place at the Sri Jayawardenapura Parliament grounds on February 4, 2015, headed by HE the President Maithripala Sirisena. Members of the clergy, Hon. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe, Speaker, Ministers, State Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Tri-service Commanders, Inspector General of Police and a vast gathering of distinguished invitees, including diplomats, state officials and members of the public are scheduled to take part in the ceremonies at Battaramulla.

    Sri Lanka Army Rugby Team recorded a convincing victory against Sri Lanka Air Force Rugby team by securing 24 points against 13 of their rivals during the Inter Club Dialog Rugby League 2014/2015 at Race Course Grounds, Colombo on Friday (30).
     
  • New 'Reception Hall' Project for Army Personnel in Colombo Inaugurated


    Fulfilling a long-due need for Army personnel and their family members, a five-storey ‘Reception Hall’ that could accommodate social gatherings, is to be built in Colombo on a suggestion, mooted by the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake by the initiatives of the Army Seva Vanitha Unit (ASVU). The auspicious foundation-laying ceremony at the premises in Maitland Place, Colombo 7 took place Saturday (31) morning, headed by Mrs Damayanthi Ratnayake, President, ASVU in the company of several senior officers.
     
  • Sri Lankan Contingent in Haiti Commended


    Haiti-based UN Peace keepers of the Sri Lankan contingent (20th SRIBAT) was commended for its dedicated service to the Haitian people by the MINUSTAH Force Commander, Lieutenant General Jose Luiz Jaborandy Jr. (Brazil) during a special meeting held at the MINUSTAH Headquarters a few days ago.


  • Final Touches Given to Independence Day Parade



    Final preparations for conduct of the 67th Independence Day (February 4) are now underway at the Battaramulla Parliament grounds with the rehearsals of the military parade. On Monday (2) morning, accompanied by Mr Uthpala Basnayake, Secretary Defence, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, Commander of the Army, Commanders of the Navy and Air Force, Inspector General of Police, went to the venue to review the arrangements.

    Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, Commander of the Army went to Jaffna Security Force Headquarters on Thursday (29) in order to attend a ceremony for distribution of TV sets, library books and open the new swimming pool and the club house, erected in the popular ‘Thalsevana’ Holiday Resort, managed by the Army.
