Warrant Officer II A.P.S Pushpakumara of 11 Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) who had been serving the UN Peace Keeping Mission in Haiti, died suddenly of a cardiac failure on admission to the Level III Hospital in Dominican Republic on Thursday (29).
Warrant Officer II Pushpakumara (39), who had actively contributed to the successful completion of the humanitarian operations during 1995-2009 was awarded the Rana Sura Padakkama (RSP), in recognition of his bravery in the operations, in addition to several other medals, such as Uttama Seva Padakkama (USP) for distinguished service, Poorna Bhumi Padakkama, North East Operations Medal, Anniversary Medals, etc.
Late Pushpakumara, an old boy of Matara, Narawelpita South Central College after completion of his studies, joined the Army on 20th December 1994 and followed several courses in the Army, including Platoon Commander Course, 17th Special Force Course, Explosives Course, Leadership Course, etc. During his career, he had served Jaffna, Batticaloa, Mannar, Vavuniya, Kilinochchi, Paranthan, Trincomalee, Welioya, Mullaittivu, Putukudiyiruppu and Chavakachcheriya areas before he was selected to be a member in the 20th UN Peace Keeping Mission of the Sri Lankan contingent which left the island on 29th November 2014 for Haiti.
His remains are to be flown to Sri Lanka shortly. He leaves behind his wife, Renuka and two daughters of 12 years and 9 years.
