  • Secretary of Defence Inspects the Sulfiquar

    PAKISTANI Naval Ship PNS Sulfiquar on a voyage home called at the Port of Colombo on September 5 on a goodwill visit to Sri Lanka. Secretary of Defence Gotabhaya Rajapaksa visited the ship on the September 7 to acquaint himself of the vessel. Navy Commander, Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe along with Commanding Officer Captain Zahid Liyas on a tour of the ship, explained to Mr Gothabaya the working of the ship and the special features it carried.

  • Air Force Puts Out Fire at Leprosy Hospital in Manthivu

    A MAJOR fire broke out at the Manthivu island in Batticaloa yesterday morning. The Air Force engaged in the rescue mission controlled the fire and airlifted 13 patients and staff of the leprosy hospital to safety. Air Force spokesman Wing Commander Janaka Nanayakkara said the Air Force base in Batticaloa observed a major fire in the Manthivu island around 6.00 a.m. yesterday.   • Sri Lanka Imports Machines to Clear Mines

    SEPTEMBER 5, 2009 (AFP) - Sri Lanka has imported equipment to speed up mine clearing in the former war zone in the island’s north, the defence ministry said Saturday. The mine-clearing machines imported from Slovakia would be used to accelerate resettlement of people driven out of the area during the height of fighting, the ministry said in a statement.   • Army Troops Launch Two More Irrigational Projects

    TROOPS in the 22 Division under “Negenahira Udanaya” programme have actively taken part in two important irrigation projects in the East. Renovation of the Rangiri Ulpatha tank and the irrigation canal running from Unnachchi tank to Vavunathivu area were the prime responsibilities, entrusted to the Army. The renovation of the Rangiri Ulpatha tank was launched on 3rd September.....

  • US Pacific Command Team Collaborates with Sri Lanka School of Military Engineering to Enhance Demining

    COLOMBO, September 9, 2009: The United States Pacific Command is providing training and equipment to the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) to assist its demining efforts. This training will build additional SLA capacity to clear mines in the Northern Province and expedite the safe return of displaced people to their homes and livelihoods. The training is being conducted at the Sri Lanka School of Military Engineering (SLSME) at Embilipitiya.

  • 750 More Madhu Pilgrims Enter for Prayers

    WANNI: ACCOMMODATING and further strengthening religious sentiments, the Security Forces and the Police facilitated more than 750 pilgrims proceeding to the Madhu Shrine on Tuesday (8) between 8.00 a.m.- 6.00 p.m. Enjoying the new freedom of movement, those devotees comprising 267 males, 303 females, 86 boys, 98 girls and 2 infants found their way to the holy shrine during those hours. The Army facilitated their transport from specific locations and provided them with refreshments.
