  • Northern Rail Track to be Extended to Omanthai

    WORK on the Northern railway track will be extended upto Omanthai within the next three months under the restoration project. Sri Lanka Railways Commercial Superintendent Wijaya Samarasinghe told the Daily News that work on the rail track from Thandikulam to Omanthai has already commenced and it is due to be completed before the first week of September. People in the Galle district under the patronage of Social Welfare and Social Services Deputy Minister Lionel Premasiri have provided aid and manpower to construct the Omanthai railway station, Samarasinghe said.

  • UK Should Help Lanka and Cease Lecturing - Lord Naseby

    "AS we look to the future, the key for us in the UK is to hopefully provide some meaningful resources to help with resettlement and to cease lecturing," said Lord Naseby in a letter of congratulations to President Mahinda Rajapaksa on the successful defeat of the LTTE.   • Govt. Dismisses LTTE's "Transitional Government" Theory

    THE " Transitional Government", declared by the LTTE, does not deserve recognition because it has been defeated and no longer exists, the government said yesterday (18). Media Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa, when questioned, at yesterday’s Cabinet press briefing in Colombo, about the LTTE’s declaration, said that claims by a non-existant LTTE did not bother the government nor could it be recognised. "The LTTE has been wiped out. We are more capable of looking after the Tamils and they will be given equal opportunities in every sphere of life ,including education and employment."

  • Three LTTE Extortionists Gunned Down in Vavuniya

    THREE LTTE cadres were shot dead by the Crime Investigation Division of Vavuniya Police during a confrontation near a school at Thuwankulam in Nelumkulama in the early hours of yesterday. The police carried out the raid on information from the public and the terrorists hiding in a cemetery opened fire at the police party. However the police retaliated the attack and the three terrorists were gunned down.

    THE Times of London newspaper reacting to the new announcement that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) would reorganize itself as a provisional transnational government of Tamil Eelam said it has not eschewed violence as a means of obtaining power. Until it was crushed as a military group by the Sri Lankan Army the outfit was known as the most ruthless terrorist outfit in the world. It is yet to be known, if violence is applied, how it would be applied in the international arena in the coming years.
