THREE LTTE cadres were shot dead by the Crime Investigation Division of Vavuniya Police during a confrontation near a school at Thuwankulam in Nelumkulama in the early hours of yesterday.
The police carried out the raid on information from the public and the terrorists hiding in a cemetery opened fire at the police party. However the police retaliated the attack and the three terrorists were gunned down.
Inquiries revealed that the three LTTE cadres were leaders of the terrorist outfit in charge of extorting in the area and responsible for several robberies and abductions s well.
During the subsequent search operation the police recovered a weapon identified as an AK47 rifle, a Micro pistol, a hand grenade and three cyanide capsules.
Police are continuing search operations in the area.
The magisterial inquiry was to be held last morning.
