Commander, Security Forces - Mullaittivu strengthening bonds with civil community in Mullaittivu area felicitated and recognized the international achievements of the 71 - year old Ms Akila Thirunayaki of Mulliyaveli area after visiting her house with cash gifts on Christmas day (25 Dec).
Ms Akila Thirunayaki participated in the Veterans Athletics Meet, held recently in the Philippines and won 2 Gold Medals and a Bronze Medal in the 1500 m, 5000 m and 800 m events respectively.
She, being a retired prison officer was brave enough to participate in the competitions without sports shoes. This courageous and spirited septuagenarian is the sixth in a family of four brothers and nine sisters. She earned her living as a prison officer before retirement and represented the country and won Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals in several tournaments of veterans in Thailand, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and India before she won medals in the Philippines.
The Commander, Security Forces - Mullaitivu, Major General M.K Jayawardane RSP VSV USP ndu on hearing of her latest international achievements went to her doorstep and felicitated her in a brief ceremony where a cash gift of Rs 50,000/= was awarded by the Mullaittivu Commander as an incentive. To mark the occasion, 15 dry ration packs at her request were also distributed among needy families in the area on the same occasion, following arrangements, made by the 59 Infantry Division and the 591 Infantry Brigade.
Senior Officers, Officers, Other Ranks, and civilians participated in this event.
