Homelessness is a pressing issue around the globe and Sri Lanka is no exception. Recognizing this vital aspect, the Sri Lanka Army without any hullabaloo, steadfast in determination has stepped in to make a significant impact on the lives of the homeless, mustering the support of donors and philanthropists worldwide.
Army personnel serving under the Security Force HQ-West under successive Commanders have been addressing this issue in the past couple of years and have succeeded in putting up 65 new houses for deserving families to-date in consultation with respective Divisional Secretariats and Grama Seva officials. Without spending a single cent of the government, troops have impressively managed to explore the financial and resource support from donors, both here and abroad, non-governmental organizations, humanitarian agencies, and local community groups, fully confident of the Army's capacity and transparency for this ongoing project of special nature.
The Security Force Headquarters - West (SFHQ - West) serves as a pivotal institution in maintaining regional security and safeguarding the well-being of nine districts covering Colombo, Gampaha, Kurunegala, Puttalam, Kalutara, Galle, Matara, Ratnapura and Kegalle and the troops soon after the war was over in 2009 have been actively involved in the construction of houses for the homeless in above-mentioned districts.
The Army's commitment to addressing societal issues beyond their traditional scope has helped bridge gaps and establishes a positive rapport with the civilians they serve and reflects the heartening display of compassion and commitment the troops have towards their own citizenery With 65 houses constructed since 2009, this initiative has not only provided shelter but also contributed to community development and empowerment. As the Army continues its efforts, there is hope for a brighter future for the homeless in Sri Lanka and a testament to how unconventional collaborations could be turned into a positive transformative change.
