2 Commando Regiment (2 CR) troops of the 1 Corps HQ in Kilinochchi initiated another welfare project by erecting a new home for a low-income family residing in Thirumurukkandi, Kilinochchi and warmed it during a simple ceremony on Thursday (31 Aug). Troops got together and raised the required expenditure for its constriction.
The beneficiary, Mr K Deeshwaran is married and blessed with one daughter and one son and is living with his family in a shelter thatched with coconut fronds near the 2 CR camp premises when his family's desperate plight was noticed by Lieutenant Colonel G.N Edinadura RSP psc, Commanding Officer of 2 CR and his troops. The recipient without a permanent source of income and a livelihood has however started erecting the house amidst grave financial hardships.
Recently, he had undergone surgery on both his knees due to illness and finds it difficult to walk. Troops as per guidelines given by their 2 CR Commanding Officer volunteered and initiated the project for completion of his house under construction.
Troops of 2 CR started constructions with locally-provided raw materials and required monetary funds were collected by the troops themselves. Within a short period of 3 weeks, troops completed the house with a kitchen, bathroom and a separate toilet before the rainy season set in. During the event, the family also received a stock of dry ration packs and school aids for the children.
Major General P.G.P.S Rathnayake RWP RSP ndc, Colonel of the Regiment of CR and General Officer Commanding of 53 Infantry Division graced the house-warming ceremony as the Chief Guest, together with Brigadier B.M.S.K.K Dharmawardena RWP RSP USP, Centre Commandant of CR and the Commanding Officer of 2 CR.
Senior Officers, Officers and Other Ranks also took part in the event.
