Role of Retiring CES Colonel Commandant Hailed

Major General K.M.S Kumara, Colonel Commandant, Corps of Engineer Services (CES) and Director General, Directorate of Engineer Services arrived at the Army HQ on Tuesday (15 August) on request along with family members and called on the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu on the eve of the former’s retirement from the Army.

The 34 year-long his career, filled with cherished memories and noteworthy achievements came in for praise of the Commander of the Army who recalled several memories, associated with the retiring officer’s engineering skills.

Major General K.M.S Kumara in return thanked the Army Commander for the invitation and expressed his gratitude for the guidance the Commander extended to him in the performance of his varied duties.

The Army Chief while sharing a few pleasantries with his family members invited to the occasion also inquired about the retiring Senior Officer’s future undertakings and plans. The Army Chief simultaneously commended the invaluable support that has been given to the Senior Officer by his family members throughout his career.

Towards the end of the interactions, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage awarded a special memento to the retiring Senior Officer as a symbol of appreciation and commendation along with a special gift to the family. The outgoing Senior Officer also presented a memento to the Commander of the Army in return as an appreciative gesture.

Here follows a brief profile of the retiring Senior Officer;

Major General K.M.S Kumara enlisted in the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet on 14 November 1989 and underwent basic military training in the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence Academy, Ratmalana and the Sri Lanka Military Academy - Diyatalawa in the Intake 34 B. He was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant and posted to the Corps of Engineer Services on 14 November 1991. He was promoted to the rank of Major General on 18 May 2023.

He has been holding the office of Colonel Commandant of Corps of Engineer Services and Director General of Directorate of Engineer Services at Army Headquarters at the time of his retirement. He also held the appointments of Garrison Engineer at Anuradhapura and Welioya, Adjutant of 2 Engineer Services Regiment (ESR), Commanding Officer of 8 (V) ESR, Deputy Director of Construction Management Unit at the Defence Headquarters Complex, Commanding Officer of 2 ESR, Advisor on Engineer Matters at Ministry of Defence, Project Manager of Sports Complex at Diyagama, Deputy Centre Commandant of Regimental Centre of CES and Centre Commandant of Regimental Centre of CES.

Major General K.M.S Kumara followed many local and foreign courses during his military career, such as Unit Administration Course, United Nations Logistics Officers’ Course, Junior Officers’ Administration Course - Bangladesh, Engineer Officers’ Works Procedure - India, United Nations Staff & Logistics Officers’ Course - Indonesia and Senior Defence Management Course - India.

In addition, the Senior Officer has read for a number of higher educational and non-military qualifications such as Masters of Science in Civil and Structural Engineering at General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, Bachelor of Science (Defence Studies) in Civil Engineering at General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, Diploma in Project Management at the Institute of Computer Aids Drafting & Designing, Advanced Course on Computer Aided Draughtsmanship at the University of Moratuwa, Designing of Fire Detection and Protection Systems Course, Designing of Electrical Installation Course, Plumbing Engineering Course and Air Conditioning System Designing Course at the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka.
