23 Infantry Division of the Security Force HQ-East through the sponsorship provided by Batticaloa-based provincial Sri Lanka Media Forum, headed by Mr Vamadeva Thiyagendran, a well-known philanthropist cum donor distributed 100 scholarships among low-income group students in Batticaloa, Oddamavaddi area and provided Rs. 100,000/= to each family member of the victims who died in the recent bus accident at Manampitiya, Kotaleeya Bridge.
The event got underway on Wednesday (19 July) at Oddamavaddi Pradeshiya Sabha conference hall, headed by Major General U.D Wijesekara RWP RSP USP rcds psc, Commander, Security Forces-East who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest at the invitation of Brigadier K.V.N.P Premarathne RSP USP psc, General Officer Commanding of the 23 Infantry Division.
The monetary scholarship scheme of Rs. 1000/= every month offered to 100 needy students in Batticaloa would continue without a break until they complete their higher studies. Arrangements of the distribution ceremony were organized jointly by 4 Gemunu Watch (GW) and 6 Gajaba Regiment (GR) troops on the instructions of the 232 Infantry Brigade Commander.
In another humanitarian gesture, the same donor organization presented a sum of Rs. 100,000/= to each family member of 11 victims who died in the recent bus accident at Manampitiya, Kotaleeya Bridge during the same ceremony.
Sponsoring Director and Secretary of the Batticaloa Sri Lanka Media Forum, together with the Divisional Secretary, Zonal Director of Education, General Officer Commanding of the 23 Infantry Division, Brigade Commanders of 232 and 233 Infantry Brigades, Senior Officers, Commanding Officers of 4 GW and 6 GR, Principals of respective schools and several other officials participated in the distribution ceremony.
