The Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, in a gesture of admiration and appreciation for exceptional hardwork and commitment, praised five Army personnel of the 11 Infantry Division who untiringly took part in the search operation for the missing Danish tourist who was found dead near Alagalla mountain range, after inviting those Army personnel this morning (15) to the Commander's office at the Army HQ.
The Commander of the Army after a brief interaction with those five Army personnel as regards the search operation and challenges they faced during the expedition praised them, pinned the special Commander’s Commendation Badges on them and congratulated them for their dedicated and exemplary role along with their comrades in the 2 (V) Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment of the 11 Infantry Division under the Security Force HQ-Central. Several Senior Commanding Officers were also present.
On Thursday (13), the Kandy Backpackers Hostel in Ampitiya through the Kandy Tourist Police had informed the 11 Division HQ that the Danish tourist, (Ms) Karb Munk Ebssen who went on trekking on Wednesday (12) had failed to turn up as scheduled. Accordingly, 11 Infantry Division troops on the instructions of the General Officer Commanding of 11 Infantry Division and the Commander, Security Forces-Central promptly responded and began the search operation.
The following morning (14), troops finally traced the dead body of the tourist while it was lying around the foot of the Alagalla hills in deep jungles.
