In a proactive effort to tackle infiltration of narcotics into the organization, the 553 Infantry Brigade of the Security Force HQ - Jaffna (SFHQ-J) arranged an extensive drug prevention awareness programme for Jaffna troops on Wednesday (June 28) at the 55 Infantry Division Gymnasium, aimed at safeguarding the well-being of the troops in the Northern Peninsula.
The programme was conducted by Mr Amaranath Thenna and Mr Sampath De Seram, distinguished counsellors serving at the Alcohol and Drug Information Centre (ADIC) and this was initiated under the guidance of Major General M.K.U.P Gunaratne RSP ndu psc IG, General Officer Commanding of 55 Infantry Division and Brigadier G.S.K Perera RSP, Commander of the 553 Infantry Brigade who closely supervised the arrangements.
420 troops from the 55 Infantry Division area participated in the programme, and it consisted of a comprehensive approach to address the complex nature of substance abuse issues, drawing on the latest research and evidence-based strategies. The programme encompassed education, prevention, support services and strict enforcement measures.
Further, troops received comprehensive knowledge and targeted training on the dangers of drug abuse, including the physical and mental health risks, legal ramifications and the potential impact on military readiness.
