A sudden fire that occurred at about 4.30 pm on Thursday (22 June) at the garbage dumping site in the Trincomalee Municipal Council in Kanniya was brought under control by 22 Infantry Division troops with the support of Navy, Police, firemen in the fire brigade and civilians in the area.
The General Officer Commanding, 22 Infantry Division and the Commander 221 Infantry Brigade closely supervised the participation of the troops of the 22 Infantry Division and the 2 Gajaba Regiment who managed to extinguish it.
Two fire trucks of the Trincomalee Fire Brigade assisted the armed forces in their fight against the fast spreading inferno. Approximately two hectares of the garbage dumping site have been affected in the fire. Sources of the fire are still unknown.
