55 Infantry Division Initiates After-School Teaching Project for Point Pedro Students

The 55 Infantry Division in coordination with the 551 Infantry Brigade in the Jaffna peninsula with the objective of raising educational and academic standards of low-income group students in Grades 9, 10 and 11 at Kottawatthai American Mission Tamil Mixed (AMTM) school and Polykandy Hindu Tamil Mixed (HTM) school in the Vadamaarachchi Zonal Education Area launched a project to conduct after- school classes for needy students two days a week in English, Mathematics and Science.

The project, initiated on a suggestion of the General Officer Commanding, 55 Infantry Division, Major General M.K.U.P Gunarathna RSP ndu psc IG was assured sponsorship by Canada-based ‘Vanni Aids’ organization through the coordination of overseas- based Major General Ravi Rathnasingham (Rtd).

Each tutoring teacher from Point Pedro area is to be paid Rs. 12,000/= monthly for each subject through the funds made available by ‘Vanni Aids’ and the project is to be managed through the Civil Affairs Office of the 55 Infantry Division with the support of 4 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment troops based in close proximity.

The formal inauguration of the conduct of supportive classes began on Monday (19) during a simple ceremony, held at Polykandy Hindu Tamil Mixed School.

General Officer Commanding, 55 Infantry Division, Major General M.K.U.P Gunarathna RSP ndu psc IG graced the inaugural occasion as the Chief Guest, together with Mr. K Sathyapalan, Director Vadamarachchci Zonal Education Office, Mrs. Umakanthi Sivakami, Additional Divisional Secretary of Karaveddi, Mr. N Jaganathan, representative of the ‘Vanni Aids’ in Canada, principals, Senior Officers, government officials and the recruited teaching staff and all the students.
