Troops of the 7 Sri Lanka Artillery on being informed of the derailment of the Colombo- bound express train in the general area of Hataraskotuwa on 13 Jan rushed to the location and assisted the removal of carcasses of dead elephants who crashed against the train.
Troops in close consultation with General Officer Commanding of 23 Division, Commander 234 Infantry Brigade and train operators succeeded in taking away those dead elephants who remained entangled underneath train carriages.
However, railway authorities after their arrival undertook the task of restoring the movement of the train after necessary repairs.
