Maj Gen Swarna Bothota, New Jaffna Commander Takes Over Duties

Major General Swarna Bothota on Monday (26) assumed duties as the new Commander, Security Forces-Jaffna during a brief ceremony at the Security Force Headquarters-Jaffna.

In accordance with military traditions, Major General Swarna Bothota upon arrival at the premises reviewed the Guard Turnout before he was received by Senior Officers including the Brigadier General Staff at the SFHQ-Jaffna. Afterwards, he was invited to take the salute of the Guard of Honour, presented by troops of the Sri Lanka Armoured Corps Regiment.

As the first segment of the day’s proceedings, the incoming Commander of the SF-Jaffna at the monument in Palaly paid tribute to the memory of fallen War Heroes of the Armed Forces who laid their lives while serving the Jaffna peninsula before May 2009.

Afterwards, Major General Swarna Bothota arrived at his new office to signify the acceptance of his new responsibilities as Jaffna Commander while members of the Maha Sangha went on invoking blessings by chanting ‘Seth Pirith’.

As one more item on the agenda, the new Commander adding memories to the day planted a Mango sapling in the SFHQ-J complex before he posed for a group photograph with respective Senior Officers and Officers serving under the Security Force Headquaters-Jaffna.

Setting out his scope of work and duties, the new Commander Security Forces-Jaffna formally addressed all the Officers and Other Ranks serving in Jaffna and urged them to work with commitment and high standards of discipline. Towards the end of the programme, he shared a cup of tea with All Ranks.

General Officers Commanding of 51, 52 and 55 Infantry Divisions, Commander, Forward Maintenance Area-North, Infantry Brigade Commanders, Commanding Officers of affiliated and all Logistic Battalions under commanded to the SFHQ-J, Senior Officers, Officers and Other Ranks were associated with the day’s inauguration of the office.

Major General Swarna Bothota before this new appointment served as the Military Secretary at the Army Headquarters. He succeeds Major General Chandana Wijayasundera who retired from the Army several days ago.
