In order to help improve English language proficiency of needy students in Kevil and Kaddeikadu villages in the Jaffna peninsula, 55 Division troops of the Security Force Headquarters-Jaffna (SFHQ-J) through an Army-designed ‘English Language Skill Development’ course launched a programme to teach English for students, weak in the language on Saturday (16).
With the blessings of Major General Chandana Wijesundera, Commander, SF-J and under the guidelines given by Major General Prasanna Gunaratne of the 55 Division’s General Officer Commanding, Captain Roshini Ranasinghe, the English Instructor at SFHQ-J undertook the responsibility of conducting those classes every Saturday between 9 - 11 am at the 55 Division HQ premises.
The main objective of this programme is to help children of low-income groups to enhance proficiency in English as their language standards remain relatively poor according to parents and teachers.
Approximately, 75-80 students are learning in ongoing classes. Students are also provided with refreshments by the Army.
