54 Division Intelligence troops in combination with Quick Reaction Team of the 8 Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment troops recovered a haul of 753 kg of smuggled turmeric from the general area of Savaripuram, Silawatura in Mannar around midnight on 23 June 2021.
The haul of turmeric, believed to have been smuggled from India is valued about Rs 4.518 m. No suspects were arrested and the recovered turmeric haul was handed over to the Silawatura Police station for further investigations.
Under the directions of the Commander of the Army and the Commander Security Forces Wanni, 54 Division troops have been very active in curbing illegal activities in the Mannar District specially by deterring the smuggle of Kerala Cannabis, turmeric and contraband from India.
Since June last year, the 54 Division under the guidance of the present General Officer Commanding has taken into custody smuggled Kerala Cannabis, Turmeric and illegal Sand stocks, worth over Rs 241 m at market value. The information gathering, operational direction and swift action by the troops are the keys to recent successes achieved by the 54 Division in Mannar District.
