22 VIR Troops Coincident with 'Thuru Mithuru - Nawa Ratak' Take to Sowing Paddy in Unattended Paddy Fields

In an exclusive gesture of Nation-building, troops serving the 22nd Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) in Seruwila, Kantale under the supervision of the 222 Brigade Commander commenced sowing of egg paddy in a ten-acre field, remained unattended for a long time on Wednesday (11) during an auspicious arrangement.

The marshy fields, owned by the Seruwawila Raja Maha Viharaya which had been left unattended were at first dug, waterways made and soil bed prepared before those troops on the directions of the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 22 Division, Major General Channa Weerasuriya and under the supervision of the Commander 222 Brigade, Colonel Wiraj Wimalasena, organized the paddy sowing ceremony inside the 10-acre big paddy field patch at the request of the temple's incumbent.

The project coincides with the Army Chief's 'Thuru Mithuru - Nawa Ratak' programme in progress at all levels and is carried out as one of the 'Nation-building' tasks of the 22 VIR Battalion, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel S. Ramanayake. Ancient religious observances, rites and rituals were performed early in the morning before sowing got underway in the presence of the Chief Incumbent of Seruwawila Temple and a gathering of state officials and villagers in the area.

Major General Channa Weerasuriya, GOC, 22 Division attended the occasion as the Chief Guest in the sowing ceremony, together with several Senior Officers. 222 Brigade Commander and the Commanding Officer of the 22 VIR Battalion welcomed the 22 Division GOC on arrival at the location.
