A mega humanitarian welfare gesture of the 221 Brigade to donate artificial limbs to 49 needy people in the Trincomalee district took place at Trincomalee Town Hall on Sunday (27) following joint sponsorship received from Colombo Friend in Need Society and the Rotary Club, Colombo City through coordination, done by Brigadier Priyantha Kariyawasam, Commander, 221 Brigade.
The General Officer Commanding, 22 Division, Major General Channa Weerasuriya has extended his blessings to the project as one more community project in the East and joined the distribution ceremony as the Chief Guest.
A preliminary survey done by the 221 Brigade in consultation with Grama Seva officials in and around Trincomalee found that those affected civilians, some with born disabilities and others for different reasons, remain unable to afford for such expensive artificial limbs, prompting the 221 Brigade to find an alternative solution to the issue.
Those 49 needy disabled persons were earlier processed for measurement before the limbs were donated to them at Trincomalee Town Hall. Representatives of Colombo Rotary Club and Friend in Need Society, sponsoring organizations, Mayor of Trincomalee, Brigadier Priyantha Kariyawasam, Commander, 221 Brigade, Brigadier Shantha Perera, Commander, 223 Brigade, Officers and Other Ranks of the 22 Division attended the distribution programme.
