The Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF) HQ at Kosgama which was reduced to ashes some time ago due to a raging inferno is slowly but steadily bouncing back with its dignified past glory emerging as a fully-fledged Headquarters after inaugurating wing by wing in the complex where hundreds of SLAVF troops are serving for the best interests of the country.
The renovation the entire complex keep done in keeping with the HE the President’s vision of “Vitas of Prosperity and Splendour” national policy Statement and Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff, Commander of the Army and Head of the National Operational Centre for Prevention of Coivd-19 Outbreak’s “Thuru Mithuru Nawa Ratak” Concept.
Heralding this revival, Major General Jagath Gunawardena, Commandant SLAVF on Tuesday (21) opened the new state-of-the art Guard Room at the entrance to the HQ premises which has been constructed to match with eco-friendly techniques and simultaneously marked the commemoration of the Easter Sunday terrorist attack, a year ago by lighting oil lamps inside the camp compound sharp at 8.40 a.m.
The HQ complex assumed more environment-friendly with founding of the 'Thamba Seru Vila' wetland reservoir inside the premises which has been constructed carefully fostering its bio diversity inside. The Commandant unveiled a plaque in the premises and vested the reservoir in the SLAVF troops amidst applause. The passageway constructed around the reservoir facilitating troops to engage in physical fitness training, named as 'Thamba Seru Mawatha' on a concept of the SLAVF Commandant while enjoying the aesthetic beauty, was also inaugurated as a part of the day's itinerary. Afterwards, the senior officer inspected other amenities of the premises and planted a sapling to leave memories of the day's inaugurations.
The reservoir received its identity as the 'Thamba Seru Vila' because of its abundance of whistling ducks in low wetlands. This natural wetland has been the residence of whistling ducks for years and the entire land has been coloured with their fluttering sound of the wings and the musical utterances which indeed bring an emotional relaxation. Identifying this priceless resource from the nature, Commandant, SLAVF took the initiative of developing this natural wetland as a reservoir which greatly contributes to the green concept and this creation indeed provides a source of inspiration for the rest of the organization and the country.
Subsequently, the Senior Officers planted saplings on either side of the passageway symbolizing the conservation of eco-friendly concept.
The programme of the day was organized to match with health directives which have been issued in relation to COVID-19 epidemic of the country.
