Troops Grow Margosa Saplings around Akkarayankulam Kovil Surroundings

A project to plant Kohomba (Margosa) saplings in the general surrounding areas of Hindu temples in Akkarayankulam, Kilinochchi served by 652 Brigade troops commenced on Monday (27).

The project coincides with the Army’s 'Thuru Mithuru - Nawa Ratak' tree planting project, proposed by Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, acting Chief of Defence Staff & Commander of the Army.

The main ceremony to begin the project was held at Pillayar Hindu Kovil at Akkarayankulam. Under the first stage of the project, over 100 Kohomba saplings were planted in 17 Hindu temple locations, situated in areas, served by 7 Sri Lanka National Guard troops on the same day (27).

Directions to this effect were given by the officiating General Officer Commanding, 65 Division, Brigadier D.M.H.D Bandara who was present at the main ceremony, together with the Chief Priest of Akkarayankulam Pillayar Kovil, District Medical Officer for Akkarayankulam Hospital, Commander, 652 Brigade, Colonel W.L.A.C Perera and environmental activists.
