Considering the difficulties faced by civilians and commuters, 61 Division troops with the blessings of Major General Kumudu Perera, Commander, Security Forces Headquarters - Wanni (SF-W) took steps to repair and restore the Poovarasankulam -Thunukkai road that provides access to thousands of inhabitants in Velankulam, Iranaiiuppaikulam, Kakkayankulam, Periyawalayankaddu and suburbs.
Brigadier K.D.C.G.J Thilakarathne, General Officer Commanding (GOC), 61 Division took the initiative in a massive Shramadana project attended by troops and the local community alike. Due to poor maintenance and extreme weather conditions experienced in the most recent times, the road turned not motor-able at all since large potholes prevented public/private transport between two destinations. .
