Army Chess Players Dominate Ethugalpura International Chess Championship - 2017

Army Chess players won both championship and Runners-up slots in the ‘Mercantile and Government Sector’ category having competed in the 9th Ethugalpura Internationally Rated Chess Championship – 2017 was organized by the Ethugalpura Knight Flame Chess Club at Kurunegala, Blue Sky Hotel premises during 14-18 December.

More than 600 chess players representing 34 island-wide different teams participated in the tournament.

Army ‘A’ and ‘B’ chess teams secured the Championship and the Runners-up slots in the ‘Mercantile and Government Sector’ category respectively.

Meanwhile, Captain W.A.T.D Sumanadasa of the Sri Lanka Signal Corps (SLSC) won the third place in the Unrated category.

In addition, Corporal S.S.M.D.M Suraweera of the Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) clinched the trophy in the ‘Visually Impaired’.

On behalf of the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka and the FIDE (World Chess Federation), the Knight Flame Chess Club organized the Ethugalpura International Rated Chess Championship - 2017 an International Rated open chess event for the 9th consecutive time.

On the final day, Monday (18), the price awarding ceremony was graced by Deputy Minister for Civil Aviation and Transport, Hon Ashok Abeysinghe MP at the invitation of the organizing committee.
