Nearly eighty small children of Army personnel during the weekend adorned the corridors at Sujatha Girls' College, Matara throwing a musical treat, “Sambuddhopadhana Bethi Gee Saraniya – 2005, †to over 500 tsunami-affected children and their caretakers.
The Sri Lanka Army Seva Vanitha Unit (ASVU), presided by Mrs Sonia Kottegoda in the company of those children of Army personnel were in Matara to entertain those tsunami-affected children by way of presentation of a colourful show of devotional songs.
Mrs. Sonia Kottegoda as Chief Guest on the occasion gave away gift parcels to over five hundred tsunami-affected children who were there to witness the entertainment. Among those Seva Vanitha members, who joined the occasion were Mrs. Dharshani Aberathna, Mrs. Janaki Sumanasena, Mrs. Nilu Ranaweera, Mrs. Kumuduni Wanigasuriya and Mrs. Chandima Wedagama. They all shared sweetmeats with those tsunami victims and mingled with them during the day's programme, showing motherly care to them.
Chief of Defence Staff and Navy Commander, Vice Admiral Daya Sandagiri, Army and Air Force Commanders and the Inspector General of Police inaugurated the first session of the “ Sambuddhopadhana Bethi Gee Saraniya†at John de Silva Memorial Hall on 3rd June 2005 before the show was taken to Matara for display.
All those who attended those functions at Colombo and Matara were entertained to dinner from ad hoc “ Danselâ€, a typical Buddhist practice of free alms giving, coordinated by SVU Ladies Clubs in different Regiments.
