The Gajaba Regiment (GR) of the Sri Lanka Army, renowned as one of the most experienced war veterans turned another new leaf in the annals of military milieu during the weekend when it gifted its soldiers with the biggest, most modern and fully equipped gymnasium at the GR Regimental Centre, Saliyapura in Anuradhapura
Commander of the Army Lieutenant General S.H.S. Kottegoda, as Chief Guest at the inaugural ceremony declared open the gymnasium on the invitation of Colonel of the Regiment Major General Seewali Wanigasekara who was the brainchild behind this colossal project. A large gathering of Gajaba Soldiers, popularly known also as Keterians marked the event after staging a hair-raising gymnastic and karate display to match with the day's proceedings
Religious observances and lighting of the traditional oil lamp preceded the formal opening that were attended by Ven. Pallegama Siriniwasabidhana Nayake Thero in charge of all eight sacred places of worship at Anuradhapura.
A volleyball match between Gajaba and Vijayabahu soldiers inside the newly opened gymnasium added colour to the occasion, after getting activities off the ground.
Construction work of this gymnasium started in 1999 at a cost of Rs. 20 million took almost about six years for completion. Major part of the expenditure was borne by the Regiment and also through the funds raised by soldiers by way of fund raising activities, such as Gajaba Super Cross, Gajaba Mela, etc.
Major General Wanigasekara in his address to the occasion praised all Officers and Other Ranks for their dedication and commitment to the cause. Vote of thanks was raised by Colonel D.S.N.K. Senadeera, Centre Commandant GR Regimental Centre.
