A foreign team of veterinary surgeons led by Dr. Tania from Australia and Indonesia at the invitation of 11 Division Commander Major General D.V.S.Y Kulathunga recently conducted a two-day long Immunization/ sterilization Programme for dogs inside the Panagoda Army Cantonment after many dogs were found affected by different infections.
The programme was also meant to curtail the spread of canine diseases and their breeding after introducing the latest methods of birth-control and sterilization. Previously, different other methods had been used for this control involving even decimation through bullets and poisonous injections.
Under the programme, a total of 171 dogs were thus immunized against rabies and sterilized under the first phase of this programme with the support of those residents in the Cantonment.
Six medical assistants from Indonesia, Mr & Mrs A. Wanigasuriya and several others extended their support for the project. The programme was made possible after this foreign veterinary team arrived in Sri Lanka to launch an immunization program for dogs, affected by tsunami tidal waves and also for all those dogs that continue to live in those areas. A separate account has also been opened in this connection to muster support for their cause.
