Tigers Suffer Losses in Fresh Confrontations

WANNI & JAFFNA: CONFRONTATIONS AND FIGHTING flared up for another day in WANNI and JAFFNA during Monday (19) as troops went on collecting or unearthing more and more LTTE arms and ammunition.

Troops manning the Forward Defense Line (FDL) in NAGARKOVIL, JAFFNA on Monday (19) at about 7.10 a.m. observed a suspicious LTTE movement, just ahead of their FDL and directed a small arms fire attack on them.

Three Tiger terrorists who tried to infiltrate the FDL got trapped in the troops fire and fell dead while some fellow terrorists vanished as the fire intensified.

Meanwhile, another set of Tiger terrorists would have been either perished or wounded in another round of counter-fire at MUHAMALE when troops Monday (19) evening fired on a gang of terrorists who tried to infiltrate the Forward Defence Line (FDL).

One valiant soldier got critically wounded in the enemy fire and later succumbed to injuries.

Terrorists wanted to provoke the troops since they were planning to enter into military-held areas in a surprise move.

In another development, one more batch of Tiger terrorists moving in the jungle areas, west of THAMPANE, VAVUNIYA on a tractor came under fire directed by the troops at about 4.30 p.m. on Monday (19).

It is believed that at least five terrorists were killed following fire directed by the troops while the tractor was shot speeding past.

In the meantime, Tiger terrorists suffered another beating Monday (19) at about 12.10 p.m. when one of their hiding strongholds in UMAYARATHUWANKULAM, VAVUNIYA was attacked with artillery fire after closely evaluating their whereabouts with the help of civilians and intelligence.

Troops intercepting LTTE radio network later confirmed that two Tiger terrorists were feared killed in the attack.

Meanwhile, in KURINCHANKULAM area, troops confronted another gang of Tiger terrorists the same day (19) at about 12.45p.m and got rid of two terrorists.

One valiant soldier injured in the fight succumbed to injuries later.

Troops in PERIYAPUNCHANKULAM and AMPADILUPPAIKULAM areas Monday (19) conducted search and clear operations in the daytime and recovered 215 anti personnel mines that were left buried by terrorists.

Meanwhile, a soldier who sustained injuries in an anti personnel mine explosion in PERIYAPANCHIKULAM, area the same day (19) was evacuated to VAVUNIYA hospital.
