It is with deep sympathy and profound sorrow, the Sri Lanka Army announces the untimely death of Brigadier S. A. M. T Seneviratne RWP RSP psc at the Army hospital in Colombo.
Popularly identified as Thilak among his comrades, he was born on 08th October 1959 to the Seneviratne Adikari Mudiyanselage family at Angammana, Narammala. He received his education both at Kurunegala Maliyadeva College and Ananda College, Colombo.
Brigadier S.A. M. T Seneviratne started his carrier in Sri Lanka Army as a second lieutenant on 18.07.1981 after he was enlisted to the Army as an Officer Cadet on 06th February 1980. He was posted to the 1st Battalion, the Gemunu Watch.
He obtained his next rank, the lieutenant after a short period on 18.01.1983. Due to his commitment and dedication, he was promoted to the rank of Captain on 18.01.1986 and Major on 01.08.1989. His outstanding performance was subsequently rewarded by promoting him to the rank of Lt Colonel on 15.12.1993 and to, Colonel on 01.08.2000. He was promoted to the rank of Brigadier on 01st February 2003.
To his credit he has followed Allied Officers' War Course at National Defence College, India, Unit Commanders' Course in Pakistan, Master of Science (Defence Studies) in India, Staff Course in India, Junior Command Course in India, Counter Insurgency and Jungle Warfare Course in India, Young Officers' Course in India and several other basic commando courses in Sri Lanka.
During his illustrious career spanning over twenty five years, he held prestigious appointments such as the Commanding Officer –1 Gemunu Watch and 5 Gemunu Watch Commanding Officer – 7 Gemunu Watch and also overlooked the duties as the Sub Area Commander in Ratnapura. He was also the Colonel for General Staff at Army Command and Staff College, Batalanda. He also served as Brigadier (General Staff) at Security Force Headquarters in Jaffna as well as in Vavuniya until he fell sick.
In recognition of his military service he was decorated with Rana Wicrama Padakkama (RWP), Rana Shura Padakkama (RSP) for his gallantry and dedication. He was also awarded a couple of other medals including Sri Lanka Army 50th Anniversary Medal, The Sri Lanka Armed Services Long Service medal, 50th Independence Anniversary Commemoration Medal, North and East Medal, Purna Bhumi Padakkama.
He leaves behind his wife and two children, a son and a daughter.
