ARMY HELPS RE-OPEN ELUTHTHUMADUVAL TAMIL MIXED SCHOOL

Security Forces in Jaffna [SF (J)], with guidance of SF (J) Commander Major General Susil Chandrapala, have extended their hand of friendship towards the civil society to promote the standard of education in the area.

The Division Commander 55 Division Brigadier V. R Silva, recently held a meeting with the Chavakachcheri Zonal Director of Education, Mr.V. Selvarajah, Principal of Eluththumaduval Tamil mixed school, Mr. S.Selvachandran, parents and the representatives of United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) to discuss measures needed to be taken for re-opening of the Eluththumaduval Tamil mixed school which had remained closed for years due to disturbances prevailed in the area.

Re-establishing of infrastructure required to carry out educational activities in the school was discussed at length during the meeting and a Swiss delegation of the UNHCR agreed to renovate dilapidated school buildings with the assistance of the UNHCR. Officers and Other Ranks of 516 Brigade, under the guidance of 55 Division, have already mended the fence around the school through a Shramadana campaign and (SLA) Engineers have conducted a thorough mine - search in the area which has been declared a minimum risky area by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The timely effort taken by the SLA to re-open the Eluththumaduval Tamil mixed school was highly appreciated by its teachers, students and parents who joined the soldiers in the Shramadana. Expressing their views, the representatives of UNHCR who shared the labour with soldiers and villagers in the Shramadana, told that they were really inspired and encouraged to contribute financial assistance to the project when they saw the enthusiasm shown by the SLA to re-establish the normalcy in northern area. Soldiers of Sri Lanka Armoured Corps (SLAC) refreshed all participants with a tea party.
