THE “SUPER HERO†at the Asia Cup Cricket Tournament, Second Lieutenant Ajantha Mendis during his first meeting with Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka this morning (11) after his historic strikes in Pakistan, expressed his overwhelming gratitude to the Army for moulding him to be a cricketer of international standards and fame.
“I was able to come up to this position in cricket because of the Army and I am indebted to the Army forever. The guidance and discipline given in the Army inspired me enormously and the Army provided me with everything,†cheerful Mendis told the Commander. Lieutenant General Fonseka on Mendis' entrance to the office of the Commander warmly congratulated him on his Asia Cup achievements and his overnight promotion to the rank of Second Lieutenant.
During his interaction with the Commander, Second Lieutenant Ajantha Mendis was assured all possible assistance and further support by the Commander for promotion of his cricketing talents. “This is the first time in the history of the Commander's office where a Second Lieutenant was accommodated and offered a seat. In that way also, you contribute to the Army history,†Commander quipped.
Lieutenant General Fonseka also requested the renowned spinner to help further develop and promote the Army Cricket Team since he has been associated with the team for a long time having played for the Army. “While you are now officering, you should not lose your balance, instead continue to serve the Army,†the Army Chief requested his officer who turned a world renowned cricketer within a very short span of time. Major General V.R Silva, Chairman Army Cricket accompanied the spinner to the Commander.
