Kilinochchi Within Sight- Govt.

GOVERNMENT\'S DEFENCE SPOKESMAN and minister, Keheliya Rambukwella, said in Parliament yesterday that Kilinochchi was within sight, and therefore the Government would pursue the target of eradicating terrorism to create a democratic environment.During the debate on the extension of the Emergency, Mr. Rambukwella said that a favourable atmosphere would be created so that a political solution, which would accommodate the aspirations of the Tamil people, could be worked out with the assistance of all democratic Tamil parties.

The minister said that the Government had won unprecedented military victories after 30 years of war and should not let go of this advantageous position. \'If we let this chance go, the country will slip back to the position that existed 30 years ago,\' he said. He said LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran had dreamed of Eelam in his Heroes\' Day speeches in the past, but had made a mere lament this year.

\'Prabhakaran has become helpless today, and credit for this should be given to the security forces. Our people are ready to make sacrifices for the eradication of terrorism,\' he said.

Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayake, earlier in the day, said that there were elements who were not pleased with the military victories.

The prime minister said that both local and international elements made interventions in this regard, as they did not want Sri Lanka to ever be a peaceful and prosperous country.

\'Therefore, they carry out various propaganda attacks to undermine what we are doing. The country is at a critical juncture under these circumstances,\' he said. (Courtesy: Daily Mirror)
