A Russian manufactured Mig- 27 fighter aircraft airborne from Katunayake airport along with another Mig-23 aircraft crashed into the general lagoon area of NEGOMBO this morning around 8.50 on Wednesday (09th June 2004)
The pilot of the ill-fated aircraft after detecting a sudden vibration in the aircraft while it was flying over this area has tried to return to the base.
However, the pilot Fl. Lt Poojana Gunatilleke managed to land unhurt with the help of a parachute after his seat got automatically ejected but the aircraft crashed.
The Air Force Commander has dispatched a special team to the location to conduct investigations.
