Chief Guest Prof. Laksiri Fernando of the University of Colombo on Tuesday (1) opened the fifth Course on Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law (HR & IHL) for Senior Non-Commissioned Officers at Panagoda Army Cantonment.
Major General G. S. C Fonseka, Chief of Staff and Chairman on Advisory Council on (HR & IHL), ICRC Head Mr Thierry Megrat and a host of Senior Officers of the Army graced the occasion.
The twenty day-long course with fifty three Officers who would upon completion of the course would work as instructors, has been provided patronage by ICRC and Human Rights Institute, University of Colombo.
To-date, 214 Officers and 183 Senior Non-Commissioned Officers have followed this HR & IHL course as Instructors. In addition, several thousands of Other Ranks have also been educated after this teaching was recognized as an academic discipline in the Army.
