NORTH & WANNI: INTENSE FIGHTING raged in northern WANNI and JAFFNA defences for another day on Tuesday (12) as troops continued their resistance against LTTE's heavy fire and mortar attacks, forcing terrorists to retreat further inland towards northern jungles, information reaching COLOMBO confirmed.
Several rounds of fresh fighting erupted around the forward most lines of the troops in KILALY and MUHAMALE Tuesday (12) morning brought about disastrous consequences to LTTE terrorists when the troops stormed LTTE positions and inflicted losses and injuries to at least 25 terrorists who were taken by surprise.
The first lightning attack took place around 5.30a.m.
Three terrorist bunkers were completely smashed by soldiers as many other Tiger terrorists who were set to resist the troops began to run in all directions for fear of their lives.One soldier sustained injuries during this pre-dawn assault and rushed for medical treatment.
Again a terrorist moving in the north of A-9 road around 11.10 a.m. was observed and challenged in MUHAMALE, the same day (12). Troops after killing the terrorist examined the location of the terrorist and recovered seven anti personnel mines (APM) from the area.
It is believed the slain terrorist was trying to plant some more APMs in the area in a secret manner.
Meanwhile, another team of soldiers in MIRISUVIL on information recovered several area maps of POINT PEDRO and CHAVAKACHCHERI along with several other warlike items, belonging to the LTTE from an abandoned court yard in the area at about 10.00 a.m.
In the WANNI theater of war, troops marching into the jungles in NAWATHKULAM area assaulted a group of Tiger terrorists Tuesday (12) around 9.35 a.m. after construction of LTTE bunkers was observed in the jungles.
At least two terrorists died in the attack and the rest ran further interior as the firepower intensified.
In the meantime, in KOILMODDAI area in VAVUNIYA the same day (12), troops attacked a pocket of Tiger terrorists and killed two of them around 10.25 a.m.
when they were secretly trying to enter cleared areas with weapons.
Meanwhile, Engineer troops in MULLIKULAM areas, the same day (12) recovered 116 anti personnel mines and 119 fuses from a jungle patch in the area around 11.00 a.m. as part of their ongoing de-mining programme.
In another move, troops on another offensive operation in order to capture a Tiger bunker line in the general area of VILATTIKULAM killed at least seven Tiger terrorists on Tuesday (12) at about 2.00 p.m. and recovered one dead body of a terrorist.
No injuries on troops were reported in the incident.
The body of the dead Tiger cadre was handed over to the VAVUNIYA hospital.
In the WELIOYA sector at KOKKUTHUDUWAI area the same day (12) troops clashed with some infiltrating Tiger terrorists killing at least three of them while injuring six more terrorists. Tigers, it is believed were trying their best to move into WELIOYA area and disrupt normalcy in populated areas.
Meanwhile, four terrorists in ANDANKULAM area fell dead on Tuesday (12) around 1.00 p.m. when troops opened fire at them while those terrorists were preparing to launch an attack on the troops.
