Cream of Army 'Calypso' Bands Selected from Wanni

Calypso band, a byproduct of the Caribbean music traditions which has gained popularity among Sri Lankan music fans too for many years, has made great strides and claims equal prominence, among Army soldiers serving round the island.

Giving a new revival to this merry-making feature in the Army, Major General Boniface Perera, Commander, Security Force Headquarters - Wanni (SFHQ-W), fully aware of musical talents of Army Calypso teams operating under all Divisions, Brigades and other formations of the SFHQ-W, took a special initiative to assemble them under one roof for a Calypso Competition on Saturday (21) evening.

Eight Calypso bands, selected for the finals from Divisions, Forward Maintenance Areas, Brigades and affiliated battalions of the SFHQ-W, thus underwent weeks-long training before they showed up for the final audition in the presence of musical veterans, like H.M Jayawardene, Ernest Soyza and the vocalist, Chandrakumara Kandanarachchi who served as judges in the selection board.

The project first evaluated their knack for music and abilities for popular music at respective formation levels and the chosen were afterwards referred for extensive training sessions, together with several music instructors and trainers before they were formed into groups to face the finals.

All those eight talented teams finally met with one another on one stage and performed to the best of their ability on their their D-day, i.e on Saturday (21) and skillfully showcased their music talents at the SFHQ-W auditorium during most competitive three rounds before a distinguished gathering, including the Wanni Commander.

The first of its kind in the Calypso music history in the Army made a huge impact and drew an enormous encouragement, giving a boost to the music industry of the Army.

Members of the audition board, Messrs Chandrakumara Kandanarachchi, Ernest Soyza and H.M Jayawardene with careful evaluation, finally declared the 4 Sri Lanka Signal Corps (SLSC) Calypso band, the winner in the competition which carried away a cash gift of Rs 50,000/=.

5 Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (SLEME) Calypso band emerged the first runners-up while 4 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) band secured the third place. The runners-up respectively carried cash prizes of Rs 20,000/= and Rs 10,000/=.
